Space

The website that I found for space is called space place. This website is part of the NASA website. On this website the child that comes to this site has a variety of choices to choose from when it comes to what they want to do. The choices that this site lists are games, projects, animations, cool subjects, amazing facts, and friends share.
Under the games section there are different games for the child to play. There is one game where you can choose a picture or words and they will be put into a puzzle and you have to solve it.
I like the tab that they have called cool subjects. Under this tab you have five choices to choose from. One of the choices is planets and the solar system. Once you click on it the next site that comes up will show you a variety of choices from the site that have to do with the planet and the solar system.
I think that this site would be good for kids that are in 3rd grade till about 7th grade in middle school. I came up with those grades based on the projects that are listed under one of the tabs. I could see the older children using this site because it gives them ideas of what they can do for a science project if they need help coming up with a project to do for science class.
I think that this would be a good site to use as a teacher because it can give you ideas about what kinds of projects you can do that have to do with space. The site also gives you fun facts that could be interesting for your student to know about. As a teacher you could have children explore this site and they can look at the different tabs under friends share. This tab has to do with space but it lists recipes that they might be fun for them to do and if they do that at home they can tell their parents about space and what they have learned so far.

Aesthetically, this website is not very attractive. There does not appear to be a specific color scheme, more like random, bright colors thrown together on a whim. However, the bright background colors make the text easy to see. The typeface is a sans-serif font, easy to read and distinguish letters. On some pages, there is a distinguishable space theme, evident from the starry background.

Content-wise, there is a plethora for children to choose from. The site includes, the sun, the planets, their moons, asteroids, and comets, as well as deep space, space exploration, and observation. This site may be oriented towards older children, as the amount of information for each celestial body is lengthy. In addition, it discusses such topics like black holes, quasars, and nebulae. However, younger children can benefit from other features of the site. There are a few interactive flash animations on the site that may also benefit those that are visual learners. Also, on a few pages, there are links that lead one to a song about the topic of the page.

The website provides a page dedicated to space observation. It helps children interested in observing the sky by provided a star map, data about the phases of the moon that one can see on that particular night (for example, the moon at 00:02:13 on the night of 14 April 2011 is waxing gibbous and 77% visible), and other information.

On this website, there are also astronomy and outer space games. These games include crossword puzzles, hangman, a quiz, and a word search, but there are also noneducational space games. On the same page there are also coloring activities-pages can be printed out or colored on the computer like with MS Paint. There are also "make your own" games with planets or a solar system.

I think this site is a good site for more advanced children. Younger children or less advanced children may have fun playing the activities provided on the games page, but may become frustrated with the length of text in the information section for the planets.

This website could be informative for younger kids that are in 2nd-8th grade. This site gives all kinds of information about outer space that all people need to know. It has a glossary that gives facts about outer space; it has games that people could play to learn more about space. It lists the order of the planets it defines what stars, eclipse, and moons are. This is a good source for teachers to use if they wanted to teach their students about space.

This site could have been designed much better than what it is. The words are directly in the middle of the screen and there is a lot of space that is left out that could have been used to make the website standout even more.

The NASA for kid’s site has a lot of different games that kids can play and learn from at the same time. Obviously its focus is on space and different things. Like it also has a lot of different history lessons about NASA that the kids can participate in. Its aimed toward kids that are around the ages of 5-8 simply because there is reading and comprehension involved but it could be a little to "kiddy" for children ages 9 and above.
I feel it would be great for teachers to use thin in the classroom because if for no other reason its an easy way to educate the young students while holding their interest and them having a little fun.

This website is easy to use and is filled with tons of information. It is extremely easy to navigate in between planets and gives short, informative explanations of the meanings of the planets' names. The fact that the website is easy to navigate makes it more accessible top a wide variety of students. It is not intimidating for those students who are not completely computer literate. The website also provides a lot of games that combine learning with fun in interactive ways. One drawback to this website is the limited amount of information provided on the individual planet websites. However, I was impressed by the wide variety of pages the website provided. It includes many moons, asteroids, comets, and even the sun! Overall, I think this website is very useful for students.
